14-screen theater coming to mall; more names to be released

Tuesday, January 13, 2004 2:48 PM PST

The Imperial Valley Mall, scheduled for completion in March 2005, has added a 14-screen movie theater complex to its fold.

The announcement comes before the official groundbreaking at the mall site, where a host of local officials and "officials from the nation's top retailers" are expected to be on hand to announce more tenants for the project.

"We have many more retailers we will announce for the project on Wednesday," said CBL and Associates Properties Inc. spokeswoman Deborah Gibb on Monday. "We're very excited about this leading theater coming to the Imperial Valley Mall."

The groundbreaking will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the construction site at Dogwood and Chick roads.

Chattanooga, Tenn.-based CBL and Associates is a venture partner in the mall project along with Dallas-based MGHerring Group.

Carlsbad-based UltraStar Cinemas has signed up with the mall to open a stadium-seating multiplex at the 150-acre site in southeastern El Centro, developers announced in a press release Monday.

The theater is said to be state of the art, Gibb added, with digital streaming technology, which means films will be streamed directly to theaters via satellite to ensure maximum clarity and consistent picture and sound.

Additionally, digital stereo sound will be featured in all theaters as well as reclining seats, according to UltraStar co-founder Alan Grossberg.

"The Imperial Valley is an excellent location for the newest member of the UltraStar Cinema family," Grossberg said.

UltraStar has 12 theaters in San Diego County, five in the Inland Empire and one in Mexico.

The Imperial Valley Mall will be a single-level, 741,000 square-foot enclosed regional mall.

The project already has attracted several prominent department stores, including J.C. Penney, Sears, Dillard's and Robinsons-May.
