IVC students set goals high for upcoming school year

Thursday, August 24, 2006 2:45 PM PDT

With the new academic year just under way, students from Imperial Valley College have come out en masse to reunite with friends, add classes and prepare for the upcoming year.

As the first several days of the semester are often the busiest, hundreds of students could be seen passing back and forth over the shady green campus this week.

Students have said they are looking forward to the excitement and changes that come with a new school year, as well as waiting to see what new classes and facilities are available to them.

The Press headed out to IVC to catch up with some students and asked them about their hopes, desires and things they would like to see during the coming school year.

Lisa Bracamonte, Brawley — “I’m going to finish taking my transfer classes to go on to (San Diego State University). I’m taking early childhood and family studies.”

Luis Sagredo, Calexico — “I just want to finish this year. I’m getting my (associate’s degree) in English and then transferring to SDSU.”

Jesus Sanchez, El Centro — “I think there should be different classes (offered) instead of the same ones. I’ve been looking for graphic design … and cooking classes. Everything is advanced; there’s no beginning or intermediate (classes that are open).”

Roxanne Rogers, El Centro — “I’m looking forward to good instructors. So far I’ve encountered really good ones. That’s the most important thing I look at when I’m in a class.”

Casandra) Leal, Calexico — “Maybe (there could be) some kind of live shows, or entertainment on campus.”

Sumiko Lara, El Centro — “It would be good if there was more excitement (on campus), especially for the new people. We could have more pep rallies and meetings. It would be cool if they held some games in the gym.”

Vanessa Carrillo, Calexico — “There could be more involvement for the students … more activities and clubs to join.”

Maria Andrade, Imperial — “(I’d like to see) better tutors, and later hours for the library. But the school is better this year, its always improving.”
