Medical vehicle donated to city

Wednesday, January 3, 2007 11:10 AM PST

CALEXICO — Medical transportation in this city received a boost from an anonymous donor Friday, when the city received a new, fully-equipped ambulance.

City Councilman Louis Fuentes said when he was sworn in last August he had been contacted by an individual who wanted to remain anonymous but wanted to buy a new ambulance for the city.

“This is a grand gesture by a donor that truly wanted to give something to the community that would actually be of an enormous help,” Fuentes said. “This is a unit that has an impact on the city’s ability to reach people in moments of crisis.”

The anonymous donation stemmed from a council meeting that the donor attended, where a “tragedy occurred,” Fuentes said, because of a shortage of emergency response vehicles. The only ambulance that was available was attending another call.

Fuentes said the donor was touched by the tragedy and decided he would help.

“This goes to show that people in Calexico have good hearts and it helps to renew our faith in human nature,” Fuentes said.

Additional equipment is being added to the ambulance, which is expected to be up and running in a couple days, Calexico fire officials said.

The value of the ambulance is around $90,000.
