VALLEY POLICE BEAT: Calexico Man arrested for grand theft

Thursday, August 9, 2007 10:17 PM PDT

CALEXICO — A Calexico business owner was arrested here Wednesday on charges of grand theft and delivering checks with insufficient funds.

Closets and Kitchens owner Luis Enrique Quiroz Agrasanchez — known as Luis Quiroz — was arrested after police built enough of a case against him, Calexico police Detective Albert Llanas said.

At least six victims have contacted Llanas in recent weeks to report that Quiroz has been paying them in checks belonging to bank accounts that simply had no money in them.

“Both his personal checking and business checking accounts are closed,” Llanas said. “There is no money.”

Working out of Closets and Kitchens at 221 Avenida de Campillo, Suite D, Quiroz is suspected of failing to complete kitchen work for customers, and paying them in deceitful checks as a means of making up for the lack of work, Llanas said.

More than $8,000 worth of checks belonging to empty bank accounts have been allegedly signed by Quiroz and given to customers, Llanas said.

“When the victims would cash the checks, there was no money in the accounts,” Llanas said. “If they called him, he’d give them the runaround.”

Quiroz was booked into the Imperial County jail, but has since posted his $30,000 bail, Llanas said.

Llanas encouraged any other victims to contact him at the Calexico Police Department.

Single structure catches fire

OCOTILLO — A structure fire erupted here Thursday evening, sending fire engines from throughout the Imperial County into action.

At 6 p.m. Thursday, Imperial County firefighters responded to a blaze in Ocotillo that started as a single-structure fire and possibly jumped to a second structure.

Fire engines from Centinela State Prison and Naval Air Facility El Centro also responded to the fire, most of which was extinguished by 7 p.m., Imperial County firefighters said.

Detailed information on the whereabouts of the fire and the number of emergency personnel who responded to it were unavailable by press time.

Seeley man admits to burglary

SEELEY — A Seeley man was arrested here Wednesday after admitting to Imperial County Sheriff’s Office investigators that he was part of a trio of thieves who recently stole property from a local gravel pit.

The arrest of 25-year-old Leonardo Moreno occurred after a 911 call alerted deputies to the 2700 block of Evan Hewes Road at 3 p.m. Wednesday, ICSO Lt. George Moreno said, adding the arrested man is not related to the lieutenant.

While at the scene, property was spotted that had been reported stolen from the Fisher Sand and Gravel pit located along Evan Hewes Road between Dunaway and Brown roads east of Dixieland and Seeley.

Deputies immediately called in ICSO investigators, who in turn had the owner of the gravel pit come to the scene to identify the property, which included welding materials, Lt. Moreno said.

After questioning, Leonardo Moreno admitted to stealing the property from Fisher Sand and Gravel on several occasions along with two juveniles.

The accomplices are being sought, Lt. Moreno said.

" Luis Enrique Quiroz is a career criminal who has quite a similar history in Mexicali, B.C. Mexico. As a non-citizen and if finally being convicted, should also be deported. His original partner in Kitchen and Closets, Inc. is also being sought on both sides of the border for defrauding a large number of mer- chants. Aforementioned company certainly merits a thorough I R S audit !!!!!! "

" Didn't the I.V Press do a story on Luis Quiroz and his place of business a short time ago? "
