Amber Flores to host softball camp Saturday

Former Calexico and Southwest high and current Oklahoma University softball player Amber Flores will conduct a softball camp for girls ages 8 to 18.

The one-day camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Calexico softball field and is co-sponsored by Calexico Police Athletic League and Flores.

“I was thinking that I wanted to give back to the community in some way and I thought a camp for girls would be a great idea,” Flores said. “My parents called me at OU and said that the PAL wanted me to do a camp and it went from there.”

In addition to Flores, several other former Imperial Valley high school softball players on college rosters will be on hand.

The list of expected players includes Cassi Gibson (Brawley) of Eastern Kentucky University, Caschjen Davis (Imperial) of Brigham Young University, Nikki Cordova (Southwest) of Sonoma State, Melissa Lerno (Southwest) of California State University in San Marcos and Milana Johnson (Central) of University of California in Riverside.

“I played with most of them and I wanted to get all the girls who’ve gone on to the next level together,” Flores said. “People probably don’t realize how many there are. … I want the younger girls to realize that girls can make it out of the Valley.”

The camp’s guest speaker will be former Central Union High and University of San Diego softball player Vanessa Leyvas, director of community relations for the Boston Red Sox.

Registration is $30 and includes a lunch, raffles and a T-shirt. Space is limited.

Registration can be made today by calling Alex Flores at 455-4567, Gina Ramirez at 562-0094 or Saturday morning prior to the start of the camp from 8 to 9 a.m.

A second edition of the Amber Flores Softball Camp for girls ages 7 to 18 is scheduled for Dec. 29 at Pittman Field in El Centro.
