IMPERIAL — The search for a new superintendent/president for Imperial Valley College will not be without its share of controversy.

A public forum drew a packed room Tuesday night in the school’s health technologies building to see Linda S. Dobb and Ed Gould field questions.

While those gathered seemed to take a shine to Gould and Dobb, at least one teacher — and local politician — believes the IVC Board of Trustees dropped the ball in picking finalists for the position.

“I think it sends a bad message that we have to go outside to pick people like college presidents,” Imperial County Supervisor and IVC instructor Joe Maruca said. “We’ve got plenty of talent right here.”

Maruca, a former public school district superintendent, said he was very upset the IVC board would recruit outside the Imperial Valley.

Dobb is the executive vice president of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, while Gould is currently the Associate Dean for Higher Education and Corporate Programs in the School of Education at Capella University in Minneapolis.

Maruca said he thought the board of trustees would have hired a local product after former president Paul Pai, who came from outside the Valley, left the school during the middle of his contract last year months after a much-publicized budgeting fiasco.

“If you look at the last two presidents they hired, they were total disasters,” Maruca said. “We’ve overlooked local people and I don’t think that’s correct.

“I’m very, very disappointed with that,” he said.

Dobb fielded questions for the first hour during the forum, asserting that she thinks “there are things I can work with all of you to solve,” one of them namely being untapped funding from the state.

Gould had his chance to shine during the latter portion of the meeting, which was designed as a way for the public to help choose the next school president.

“I really want to thank our search committee for its diligence and very thorough work in narrowing our candidate list down to this final group,” IVC board chairwoman Rebecca Ramirez said.

“We want to have broad input from both the campus community as well as the general public before we make our final choice,” Ramirez said.

" Before you all condemn, please check out Linda S. Dobb first. She has done so much for the City of Bowling Green, OH and it's College.
1. With grants, opened a safe shelter for battered women.
2. Worked with the local library to open a teen room. All with no funding from tax payers.
3. Opened a teen center with grants and private funds to give the young teens a place to go after school instead of getting into stores, trouble, etc.
4. Was voted citizen of the year.
5. Most if not all of her family is in CA.
BG is losing a valuable person. "

" What bond money? Look at your tax bill. We all pay for improvements at IVC. The voters decided the college needed to be improved. "

" As long as IVC presidents will lay low and not make trouble > the community is happy. But we have seen that a college president can make a lot of problems when (s)he steps out too far. I just want the next president to build the new facilities with the millions in bonds moneys we voted for them > and then stay invisible. Let the teachers teach. "

" okay, so let's put aside the wonderfully mature name-calling in here and talk about what exactly we want from a president. did either of the two candidates fit the mold? if you had to choose between the two who were presented to us, who would you choose? "

indigo wrote on Jan 17, 2008 8:11 AM:

" Ricocafe is right about this being a stepping stone. Look at the biographies of the candidates and you will see that they jump around like beans. The last 2 presidents did not stay long either. Some loyalty and committment would be nice, but I don't see that IVC puts value to these qualities. "

" There are 2 problems with trying to hire someone from the valley. Who would be willing to do this job for just $140,000 per year? (answer= only an outsider). Next, someone from the valley might stay around more than a couple of years. (answer = this might lead to good decisions and stability at IVC) "

ricocafe99 wrote on Jan 16, 2008 5:43 PM:

" After reading the comments again, I have to agree with Mrknowitall, if anyone local was interested enough and well qualified enough to apply for the job then the board would have included them in the forum. Maruca was probably just shooting from his artificial hip again because the board probably passed over him or his wife. "

mrknowitall wrote on Jan 16, 2008 4:13 PM:

" I can't say that I agree with Maruca, because this job was open nationwide, including inside the Valley for several months. Locals could have applied and if they did, they had a chance to prove themselves in the process. The IVC Board seems to really care about the direction the college is taking, so I think they probably invested a great deal of time whittling the field down to these two. Just because you are local, doesn't mean you are a good fit for taking the reins of the college. If I read right, a community group screened and interviewed the candidates prior to the forum. Maruca may have ulterior motives for saying what he said without knowing the facts. "

ricocafe99 wrote on Jan 16, 2008 2:07 PM:

" depezhe...here in the valley we have several school districts with very experienced superintendents and assistant superintendants plus many of them are home grown from SDSU which has graced the valley with many excellent educators. I can think of a couple recently retired ones from El Centro who would make good candidates. These are people who are dedicated to the valley and probably would not look upon the job as a stepping stone to another area which is a problem many of our large public agencies have. (not just IVC) "

ricocafe99 wrote on Jan 16, 2008 8:31 AM:

" I don't usually side with Maruca but on this one I have to agree.(although he may have a secret agenda) Unlike many other industries we do have excellent people in education right here in the Valley. "

" Sadly, i would rather have the job given to an outsider. Getting someone from the valley will lead to favoritism. "

" It seems we often outsource our best jobs to outsiders. Then they end up leaving, often with a severance package. "

mexictodabone wrote on Jan 16, 2008 1:15 AM:

" Ramirez!!! what the hell are guys thinking, Maruca is right on this one, we got the talent in the valley why the hell go outside...I.V.C. board of trustees are you kinding me, can't trust them. They need to all be put out of commision. "
