Mexicali grave flaunts Nazi association

Friday, January 18, 2008 10:32 PM PST

JOSELITO VILLERO PHOTO
A grave bereft of the name or names of those buried there lies in Mexicali Municipal Cemetery No. 1, decorated only with Nazi symbols.
MEXICALI — The Mexicali Municipal Cemetery No. 1 is a time warp, with dilapidated tombstones dating back to the 1920s, when this city’s population was at 14,500, a fraction of the million believed to live here now.

Surrounding the cemetery are symbols of the city’s modernity: a new McDonalds, the Plaza Cachanilla mall and an IMAX Theater.

But deep inside the graveyard there is a marker that further points toward another time.

An unnamed tomb with a metal cross topped with a swastika breaks the continuity of Jesuses and virgins spread throughout the cemetery. The red and black symbol is flanked by other emblems that make it clear the swastika is of a fascist nature.

Dangling on the cross is a metal pendent formed into a Schutzstaffle, or SS, emblem, the insignia of the powerful paramilitary group that enforced Adolf Hitler’s racist Nazi ideology from 1925 to 1945. Another swastika is engraved on the 4-foot slab of stone at the foot of the tomb.

The peculiar gravestone has generated attention throughout the estimated 20 years it has existed at the cemetery, said Adrian Estrada, the cemetery’s groundskeeper.

But the names of the interred are unknown to city officials, who manage the cemetery. It is believed a man and a woman are in the grave, Estrada said.

“Many newspapers have come to learn about it, but they come for nothing. We don’t know who it is,” Estrada said, a stocky man with jet black hair and mustache.

A metal nameplate and box attached to the cross has been painted over. Crude scrapes run across it, likely made by the curious but revealing only bare and rusted metal. Without knowing the names of the interred, their records are untraceable, Estrada said.

The grave, which is splashed with what appears to be fairly recent paint, is visited by a woman family member and a man, Estrada said, believed to be a police officer.

He comes bearing swastikas on his clothes, Estrada said.

The grave, if those buried in it are descendents of Nazi Germany, is at an unusual site.

Mexicali historians interviewed said they have not heard of any migration from Nazi Germany into the Mexicali Valley.

Maria Isabel Verdugo, a historian at the Mexicali Municipal Archives, said she has done research on Chinese and Japanese migration, but she has not come upon any evidence from Nazi Germany.

She said she is aware of Mexicans in the city of German descent, but their ancestors’ arrival to the area pre-dated World War I.

Verdugo said the tomb is “rare.”

But there have been documentations of Nazi activity in Mexico during Hitler’s reign.

The late reporter John L. Spivak, who exposed fascist movements in the Americas, devoted a whole chapter to Nazi activity in Mexico in a book published in 1939.

Nazi agent Hermann Schwinn arranged a pivotal meeting in Mexicali in 1933, according to Spivak.

Baja California historian Georgina Cuevas Walther, whose grandfather is German, said a good way to learn of the grave was to visit it on Dia de los Muertos, the Mexican holiday, honoring the dead and when many come to visit loved one’s gravesites.

But on the morning of that day last November, as families came to well wish their dead, no one appeared near the Nazi tomb, and the mystery remains.

wesley, all types of governments have a "common thread" whether communist, fascist or anywhere in-between. The Nazis were no exception. But, they were conservatives-Not liberals, in any sense of the word. They believed that in order to do away with "undesirable" and political opponents within their country, they first had to Demonize,Dehumanize, Demoralize, Defeat. They did this by "repeating the same lies, over and over until they were accepted as Truth"(I believe that was Adolph's line). The ,similarity I see here in that regard, is "uncanny" as well, although, not surprising.

Holocaust. Hitler wrote, while in prison, what he wanted to do and whom he wanted to do it to in "Mein Kampf." It was intercepted and decoded by the British, and its contents hastened the entry of the United States into World War I.

" I have to wonder if the nazi symbols on the cross portion of this gravesite wasn't added later maybe by a nazi organization or individual. The emblem on the grave itself shows the "swastika" as a religious symbol. The swastika on the top is shown as the Nazi wore it with the symbol rotated. The germans did not display the swastika as shown on the grave itself. Besides that Nazis were Godless so what's the deal with the cross.
How far back do photos of this gravesite go? "

" There, perhaps, are or were many others we don't know about. If they were on the run, they weren't gonna advertise their whereabouts. How many years after the death Mengele, the Nazi Concentation Camp "the Angel of Death" did the world know of his whereabouts? This gravesite was probably "a last request" to their survivors on their funeral arrangements. Maybe a little DNA testing could be helpful here. "

" I heard story's from old timer's about how German u-boats would come in to San Felipe during WW2, for a little r&r. "

" Wikipedia offers information on: Rosicrucianism
It goes into the History, Origin, Interpretation and other stuff that does seem to confirm the rose on the gravesite of this story. IV Press does not allow bloggers to post links, so I am not going to do such a thing.
Just another reminder to vote: Say NO to Proposition 93 (do not extend term limits!)
We need new, representatives in the California State Assembly. "

" Another interesting story by IV's Victor Morales. This staff writer really does his homework before having a story published. Nice work Victor..keep it up, you have provided a large segment to what this paper has needed in a long time. We used to have Nelsy Rodrigues with the Desert Sun who provided our paper with equally as fantastic stories.
Strange stuff at this grave site. Who knows, I am sure there are still a few hiding in the USA disguised and hiding from the Jewish Defense League whose mission is to seek and find these, "Hitler" guards/supporters. Take a tour of their website and it will brief you on who their most recent find has been in the USA, but I don't know of a gravesite such as the one in Mexicali. Now, I am curious about what blogger licpel wrote about "rosicrucians" and with the beauty of the internet, the search will be easy. P.S. Say, "NO TO PROP. 93" Should be titled: Prop. "NAUGHTY 3" we need change!!
"

" the rose dangling in the middle signifies he was a rosicrucian. maybe the guy just liked to be associated with semi secret societies. probably just a mexicali eccentric with his own personal view of the world. Adolf hitlers true grave? "
