Satellite TV provider to offer local channels

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 10:57 PM PDT

UPDATE: It looks like the readers who have written in time and time again about local channels being provided on satellite television are finally going to get the answer they’ve been looking for.

Well, at least for Dish Network customers.

This week Dish Network will begin offering local programming for an additional fee. Customers of the satellite company will have to call to receive the programming.

The cost of the local channel package is $5.99 a month or $5 a month depending on the channels the customer receives.

International customers may need a second dish to receive the signal from the satellite, Dish Network representatives said.

The affiliates included in the new offering are Yuma-based ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW, Univision, Telemundo, LATV and TFTRA affiliates. The Dish Network channels will be from 8420 through 8428.

Though Dish Network is going to offer local channels, a spokesman for DIRECTV said, “We currently do not have plans to launch locals via satellite in the Yuma (market).”

DIRECTV customers in San Diego and other metropolitan areas like Palm Springs and Tucson, Ariz., are able to get local channels but they are much bigger markets.

Maybe some competition on the satellite market locally could influence DIRECTV’s decision in the future to offer local programming. Until then at least some customers, if they’re willing to pay for it, can put up the rabbit ears.

" I'm the General Manager at KSWT CBS and CW. I've been informed that DISH network has had some problems implementing the service, but they are working to correct the glitch on their side. It seems many of the operators are not being informed properly and the computer upgrades have not taken place.

If you're trying to get the service, keep trying, they say it is being fixed.

Welcome new viewers. We will work hard to earn your trust!

Sincerely,

Andrew Wyatt
General Manager
KSWT News 13 & the CW "

" As a Dish subscriber the only "Local" channels available to me have been San Franscisco and Atlanta GA. Naturally these come at an extra fee. For the present would like to get local channels from Yuma, Ariz and El Centro, CA.
Somebody please tell me how ! You have my e-mail address, above. "
