Viewpoint: 30 more reasons I don’t like PETA

Tuesday, June 10, 2008 1:02 AM PDT

My dear friends at PETA are at it again.

I must say, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals certainly spares no expense in pushing its cause. Over the years I’ve received dozens of mailers and packets about how we should be nice to animals and not eat meat. As a certified meat eater, I usually toss them.

The latest mailing came in the form of a packet including pages of documentation and a DVD. This one caught my interest because it included 30 reasons to go vegetarian. I thought I would share some of these reasons with you, along with my personal commentary.

Because heart disease begins in childhood. If that’s the case, then why would I stop eating meat now? Of course, heart disease will have to duke it out with the skin cancer I’m sure I got from the annual sunburns of my youth.

Because a vegan diet reverses heart disease. But will it do anything about that looming skin cancer?

Because eating meat and dairy products makes you fat. Actually, eating too much of anything makes you fat. Pound down plate after plate of Brussels sprouts every day and see if you don’t pack it on, Porky.

Because you shouldn’t have to lie to your kids about the food you eat. What? Do you think that would stop my son from eating pepperoni pizza or my daughter from enjoying hamburgers? Hey kids, meat comes from animals. Well, that didn’t stop them.

Because in every package of chicken, there’s a little poop. It’s called protein, OK? Seriously, there’s this thing called water, and I use it to rinse meat off before I cook it. Problem solved.

Because meat is filthy and bloody. See the last response.

Because it isn’t fair. Hey, life isn’t fair. Paying taxes isn’t fair. The fact that I am not a rock start isn’t fair. Don’t get me started!

Because no living creature wants to see her family slaughtered. I’m sorry, I was eating a pork chop and missed that one.

Because eating meat and dairy products causes impotence. What! (I yell, spitting out my pork chop). Actually, that’s a scare tactic — and one that probably works on some men. Thank goodness cavemen didn’t know this or we might not be here.

Because you wouldn’t eat your dog. No, I wouldn’t, but my dog would sure eat me in a pinch. In fact, both of my dogs have been giving me the eye lately. Maybe I should drop a few pounds.

Because mad cow disease is in the U.S. But California has happy cows, right?

Because it’s violence that you can stop. In order for me to eat an animal, it must be killed. I’m sorry, that’s the way it is.

Because no one should have to kill for a living. Hey, no one is forcing them to work at a slaughterhouse. I’m sure PETA has jobs for everyone with good pay and benefits.

Because it takes a small person to beat a defenseless animal … and an even smaller person to eat one. Earlier you called me fat. Which is it, big or small?

Because no animal deserves to die for your taste buds. It’s called the food chain.

Because the grain used to feed animals could be used to feed hungry people. So could meat.

Because more than half of all water used in the U.S. is used to raise animals for food. And some is used to wash down a good steak.

Because you can’t eat meat and call yourself an environmentalist. OK.

Because they’re defenseless. Have you ever wrestled a pig? They’re pretty tough.

Because no matter how you slice it, it’s still flesh. Yes, it is, and quite tasty when prepared correctly.

Because commerce is no excuse for murder. Killing animals for food is murder? In which state?

Because eating fish doesn’t make you a vegetarian. You’ve got that right. It makes you a fish eater.

Because even prisons aren’t this crowded. Have you seen our prisons? Have you?

Because everyone wants to be free. Very true. I want to be free of PETA’s constant nagging, for example.

Because you know this is wrong. No, eating meat is not wrong. It is natural and humans have been doing it since they have been in existence. What is wrong is trying to make us feel guilty for doing it.

" Farmalf, I'm giving my opinion, I'm not trying to feed you anything. But if you'd only open your mind as fast as you open your mouth, then you would realize, what I am saying is true. "

" a.dupre hit it right on the spot! I totally agree with him (or her), not much to add to it. Great job a.dupre! And yes, Mr. Jennings, you shouldn't have tried so hard, you were "endlessly trying to be witty". By the way, and correct me if I am wrong, it seems to me that you probably actually requested this DVD. I say this because I have the same exact DVD and to receive it, it must be requested, normally through the PETA website. From my experience, those who I know that have received other mailings from PETA did not 'magically' receive this DVD--unless they requested it. So is this something you WANTED to watch?? "

" Miss Y- If "you are what you eat" as you stated, than I'm very glad that I'm not eating what you're feeding us: Pure B.S. "

" I haven't done my research (ay, si)on PETA but I still want to throw something on here.
Have you seen how some slaughter houses treat these animals? Isn't it wrong to kill an animal improperly? If not, then why was there a beef recall when that video came out on how the cows were mistreated? And the horses, OMG! How sad!!
Then there's the fur industry and how sad it is to see caged creatures and their living conditions just for some rich-b**ch to wear an animals coat.
I think it takes more than a dozen furry animals to make up one coat?

Then there's those videos of cats and dogs how the chinitos treat them. Very, very depressing.

I guess there is a just cause for PETA and it takes courage to stand up for the mistreatment of animals.

Oh and one other thing. I don't think heart disease starts in childhood. Maybe some conditions are diagnosed in childhood but not all and they have nothing to do with meat.

You are what you eat Jbrad.

VIVA PETA! "

" mmello, did you catch MY spelling error? You lost your credibilty when you forgot to put in the proper punctuation in the very quote you were citing. "

jbashley wrote on Jun 10, 2008 4:27 PM:

" mmello...seriousely! Do spend all your time reading newspapers, print and online, to find spelling errors? Get a life! "

I copied and pasted this from the on-line article. Please hire better proofreaders who also understand the meaning and nuances of words and expressions.

Computer Spellcheck and/or grammar programs never take the place of reading all print copy word for word.

This probably explains why you are not a rock START--and never will be.

Typographical errors in quick posts, e-mails, etc. are normal. Humorous errors within a humor piece earn grammarian points. "

" Mr. Jennings,

I'd never really thought anything about you in the past. When I read your writings, none of them really stood out to me as terrible or ignorant. In fact, I am pretty sure I've chuckled at some of your pieces. But this is ridiculous. I really hope you wrote those comments to stir up the sentiments of people who DO agree with the 30 reasons (or even just 3 or 4), and not just to be "funny" or "witty". If you are being sincere in those comments, you, my friend, think and write like an 8th grader.

What you should've done was gather countering information on each of the 30 reasons and posted those. People might actually take you seriously if you did some research before blabbering on endlessly trying to be witty. "

Most of these morons have been Obamatized also a supporter of murdering the unborn.

PEOPLE EATING TASTY PEOPLE (PETA) "

" PETA! Explain to me how eating meat doesn't make me an environmentalist. I use public tranportation to cut down on fossil fuel use and I use a condom so as not to have uncontrolled population growth. That makes me an evironmentalist. Not my diet! Hey PETA, what resources were wasted by YOU sending Brad your documentation along with a DVD? I'll be at Comacho's having a Carne Asada burrito waiting for a response. "

jbashley wrote on Jun 10, 2008 10:26 AM:

" Definition of "Environmentalist" from Websters New World Dictionary - a person working to solve environmental problems, as air and water pollution, the exhaustion of narural resources and uncontrolled population growth - PETA!!!! what in the @%ll does that have to do with being a meat eater? I use public transportation, ride a bike and use a condom, but since I eat meat I'm not an enironmentalist? C'mon! "

dudeski wrote on Jun 10, 2008 10:16 AM:

" Your best piece yet Brad! I'm inspired to head out to the Town Pump for a fat, juicy steak and catch the fight... I mean the one on TV, not the...other one. "

drussel wrote on Jun 10, 2008 9:51 AM:

" Good one, Brad. Now...where does the queue begin so I can start suing somebody because I'm an old, fat guy with heart disease caused by eating too much beef and, in an attempt to mend my ways, turned to chicken and was then poisoned by the poop in said chicken thereby causing my e-coli? No, wait...I got e-coli from eating too much spinach, and a case of salmonella from eating one too many tomatoes.

I give up...I'm just gonna go eat a PETA rep. Can't get ill from any of those folks, right? Cannibalism can't be all bad. "

gymjunkie wrote on Jun 10, 2008 9:32 AM:

" So negative Brad. You get my nod on this one though.
Perhaps PETA can get "meat" put on the endangered species list. After all killing and eating all that meat has got to be contributing to global warming somehow. OK Al let's hear the statistics. "
