Supervisor talks dunes closure

Tuesday, July 22, 2008 10:32 PM PDT

Imperial County Supervisor Wally Leimgruber on Tuesday met with representatives from U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office to discuss the possibility of closures to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area.

Leimgruber said the meeting was preliminary and “very premature” but stemmed from conservancy groups that are “looking at the protection of desert species,” he said.

Leimgruber said there have been areas in San Bernardino County that have been eyed by the conservancy groups. Leimgruber said the discussion did not go into specific groups.

“For some reason there was discussion of them coming into Imperial County,” Leimgruber said. “But if there was any land that was to be added (from Imperial County), we discussed what affects and impacts it would have locally.”

Leimgruber did not say if any other meetings were scheduled to further discuss the situation.

COUNTY COULD PAY $400K IN LAB COSTS

Imperial County could pay more than $400,000 annually for state Department of Justice forensic services if the proposed state budget is adopted.

Imperial County Supervisor Wally Leimgruber said Tuesday he was recently informed of the cost through the office of state Attorney General Jerry Brown.

A letter to Leimgruber says of the 58 counties in California, 47 utilize the 11 Department of Justice crime laboratories at no cost. Past budgets had covered the cost through the state’s general fund.

The proposal would be effective for the fiscal 2008-2009 budget.

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS MOVING FORWARD

The Imperial County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved moving forward with road improvements that will include the creation of a turn lane at the intersection of Forrester and Cady roads.

Supervisors approved an agreement with San Diego-based Pacific Municipal Consultants for $67,700 to conduct environmental studies at Forrester and Cady and for improvements on Keystone Road from Highway 111 to Austin Road.

The cost is 90 percent reimbursable through state funding with the county providing a 10 percent local match.

SUPES APPROVE AGREEMENT WITH P.D.

Supervisors approved a new contract with the Imperial Police Department to provide security services at the Imperial County airport.

The contract, a cooperative agreement with the Transportation Security Administration, will cost more than $28,000 per year. The previous contract cost $60,000 per year.

The contract will run through April 30, 2009.
