8,000 sought 250 Brawley Wal-Mart jobs

Thursday, October 9, 2008 10:04 PM PDT

JOSELITO VILLERO PHOTO
Wal-Mart SuperCenter gets ready for its opening next week in Brawley.
BRAWLEY — About 8,000 individuals applied for the 250 full-time and part-time jobs at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter that will open here Wednesday, store manager Oscar Romero said.

Romero said that typically in a metropolitan area, such as San Diego, about 3,000 to 4,000 people apply for employment.

The state recognizes a metropolitan statistical as having a population of 50,000. Brawley’s population as of January was 26,513.

He said there was a similarly large number of individuals who applied for positions at the Calexico and El Centro Wal-Marts.

“The unemployment rate is higher in Imperial Valley than in metropolitan areas,” Romero said.

He said another reason there were such a large pool of applicants was because they had a longer time period to apply because the grand opening date was previously postponed.

The opening of the Brawley store was postponed multiple times due to issues with the entrance road and intersections.

In total the Brawley Wal-Mart SuperCenter accepted applications for more than a year, he said.

The average unemployment rate in Imperial County from September 2007 to August 2008 was 20.7 percent. For this same time period in California the average unemployment rate was 6.3 percent.

An additional 120 employees were transferred from other Wal-Mart stores — 100 of which were from the El Centro and Calexico Wal-Marts.

Romero said the company sifted through the many applications and based its hiring decisions on an applicant’s background and work experience.

About 100 of the 250 individuals were Brawley residents. Others were from Mexicali, Calexico, Niland, Westmorland and Calipatria.

The store’s grand opening is at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, with doors opening at 8 a.m.

" Cry babies !!! American Citizens living in Mexico should work anywhere they can get a job.

Mexican Citizens with Green Cards (permenant residents status) living in Mexico(working in the USA) should be fired and stripped of thier green cards.

Wallmart is like all other employers---they are required to verify employment status--and than hire who they want---not who you losers want them to hire. " "

Or you can always move out of the county!!! "

" Ok. Here's justification. YOU interview someone who is perfectly qualified for a job and then tell them, "Sorry. You don't live where we want you to live." See how long it takes for a lawsuit to come across your desk. Remember, these are jobs going to people who are legally working in the US and for whatever reason, living in Mexico. Not a damn thing wrong with it. I could easily understand if they were hiring illegals. But they're not. These statistics should not even have been released. I'm sure that violates some kind of privacy laws or something. What about people who live in Brawley but spend a lot of time in Mexicali? Little if any difference. And meaningless. If someone deserves a job, it should not matter where they live. Now, driving to Brawley from Mexicali every day is certainly a challenge. But if the workers are willing to do that, it's their decision. "

" I am one of the many people a bit upset about the news of Wal-Mart hiring Mexicali residents. It's not because of the fact that they are not "U.S. citizens" because I know many of our citizens do decide to reside there, but because of the fact that it is a different area completely. Our economy is horrible right now and I can understand them going as far as Calexico but shouldn't it have stopped there? What about El Centro? How many people were left out there? Hiring based on experience...and those who have very little or maybe none will never get the chance to learn because employers don't want to take the time to train? How do you try to help those from a different area when this county needs so much help as it is. Now we're ignoring it?This dissapointing news is some what foresight into our future in the imperial valley. If we can't help ourselves why is it we think we might be able to help anyone else? "

" Hey, everyone who is upset about jobs being offered to people from Mexicali, you are wrong. In fact, the story's author is wrong for even including the statistic as it is not important. US citizens CAN live in Mexico. I am a US citizen (in fact, I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah and I'm white). However, after marrying my wife, who lived in Mexicali at the time, we moved to her house in Mexicali. Here I was, a gringo, crossing the border every day to go to work. As American as any other American, yet living in Mexico, working a job in El Centro. I didn't "take away" anyone's opportunity at a job. I had a job I had applied for and been offered... just like any Valley resident. However, I lived in Mexico. So think before you come up with a pointless argument like that. There's no way they can say, "Well, we'd love to offer you a job, but you don't live in this town." If you're qualified and you're offered a job, it doesn't matter where you live. -- Josh Bailey. "

You can go to SPB and read the job requirements/specifications and a lot of the jobs require a BA or at least and MA but I know for a fact that many people who have these jobs dont even have an AA.
