Valley Police Beat: Man killed by passenger train

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 11:22 PM PST

WINTERHAVEN — Imperial County Sheriff’s authorities are investigating the death of a 21-year-old man was struck and killed early Wednesday by an Amtrak passenger train.

It was uncertain whether Lewis Jefferson’s death was accidental or if he deliberately put himself in front of the moving train, said Winterhaven fire Capt. Dennis Robertson. Jefferson was identified by Imperial County Deputy Coroner Eric Frazier.

The 4:25 a.m. incident occurred at the Old Agricultural Station and Quechan Road, Robertson said. The train had been traveling west; the railroad tracks were shut down for two hours as sheriff’s deputies conducted their investigation.

Autopsy set for crash victim

GLAMIS — An autopsy is scheduled Tuesday for a Torrance man who died from injuries he received from a crash east of Gecko Road, coroner’s officials said Wednesday.

Ryan Norman Allen, a 33-year-old Torrance resident, was riding a 2008 Yamaha Raptor 700 all-terrain vehicle Monday east in the open desert at an unsafe speed, said California Highway Patrol Officer Carlos Flores.

Allen approached a sharp drop of a bowl-like formation in the sand and plunged 30 to 40 feet, Flores said. Allen’s ATV struck the sand, which caused him to be ejected.

The people who accompanied Allen to the dunes area called authorities about 3:57 p.m. but Allen was not pronounced dead until about an hour later, Imperial County coroner’s officials said.

Teens nabbed on charges

IMPERIAL — Four teenagers were arrested this week on tagging and burglary charges, a detective said in a press release Wednesday.

Three teens, ages 14, 15 and 16, were arrested Monday in the area of Sunset Park, an area that Imperial Police Detective Robert Martinez said has had a considerable amount of graffiti in recent weeks.

Police suspect feuding tagging crews and a local gang that is tagging over previously scrawled graffiti is the reason for the increase, Martinez said.

An officer checking the area of Neckel Road noticed a previously re-painted wall that had been vandalized, which had fresh paint. The officer saw three juveniles tagging another wall south of the freshly “tagged” wall, the release said.

The youthful suspects had spray cans on their person and were taken to juvenile hall.

On Tuesday, officers went to the 600 block of Bahia St. where a resident called police about a burglary in progress.

Several juveniles were detained but a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of stealing miscellaneous tools from the home that were later recovered, Martinez said.

Parolee, 28, arrested

WESTMORLAND — A parolee was arrested Tuesday for allegedly being possession of narcotics for sales, said a sheriff’s sergeant.

Imperial County sheriff’s investigators David Barboza and Jose Romero were conducted a parole search and contacted 28-year-old A.V. Lowrie, said Sgt. Joe Alvarez.

Lowrie was arrested on suspicion of a controlled substance for sales and other narcotics-related offenses. The suspect was also arrested for violating parole, Alvarez said.
