VALLEY POLICE BEAT: Gun clip found in pickup

Sunday, January 4, 2009 1:02 AM PST

A car burglary in which a gun clip was found in a residential neighborhood in El Centro does not appear to be the work of gun-toting suspects, an El Centro police officer said Saturday.

The gun clip that was found in the bed of a burglarized Ford F-150 pickup may have been dropped by someone passing by the area after they spotted an officer on patrol, said Officer Alfredo Hernandez.

The gun wasn’t found and might have been discarded elsewhere, Hernandez said. The clip was retrieved by police, he said.

Becki Lopez, the resident whose truck was broken into at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, said she feared burglars carry guns while committing their crimes. Lopez spoke of another burglary done to a truck at the Imperial Valley Mall.

“I’m going to let them take it,” Lopez said. “I’m not going to go outside. It’s very scary.”

But Hernandez explained that the incident involving the gun clip was isolated.

BLM officers busy in dunes

GLAMIS — There were 907 law enforcement-related incidents that have occurred since Dec. 30 in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, including the arrests of seven people suspected of driving under the influence, Bureau of Land Management spokesman Steve Razo said Saturday.

All the DUI arrests were alcohol-related, while the other incidents involved people being issued citations and safety-violation calls, Razo said. Medical-aid calls were reported for people suffering contusions and other injuries, Razo said.

A full account of all the incidents that occurred during the weekend following the holiday celebrations won’t be available until possibly Monday, Razo said.

One injury report involved a man trying to evade authorities on his quad who plowed into a 13-year-old boy riding an all-terrain vehicle. The boy suffered pain to his right ankle and the man was arrested, Razo said.

The only reported death was of a 26-year-old Mesa, Ariz., man afflicted with asthma who died in his sleep on New Year’s Day while camping at the dunes, Razo said.

No one hurt during call

A faulty light fixture smoldered inside a large refrigeration unit Saturday at the Smart & Final store but was extinguished by the manager before further damage occurred, an El Centro fire captain said.

The odor of burnt rubber could be smelled from inside the rear of the business at 1290 N. Imperial Ave. No one was hurt during the 12:28 p.m. call, said El Centro Fire Capt. Mike Apalategui. A fire truck respond to the incident.

Store manager Juan Resendiz is credited with putting out the burning light bulb before fire sprinklers were activated, Apalategui said. Resendiz used a pallet jack to remove the damaged refrigeration unit where frozen food items were stored.

" mmarteen, technically, it is a magazine. The most common street name is "clip", so stop trolling the comment forum. "

" Hey imbecile1985... not all DUI arrests are alcohol related... Someone sniffing glue can get a DUI for being under the influence of toluene. "

" Why no mention of all the car burglaries that happen on Friday, only the one for the Ford F-150? Last count as of noon yesterday was 8 and counting in a 3 block area, all believed to the the same burglar trying to the steal cars. Burglar left the contents of the vehicles untouched. Wouldn't it be a good idea to warn everyone? "

" 907 incidents in Glamis, BLM must be starving for money. I heard they where giving citations just for any stupid reason. "

" It was a "magazine," not a "clip." Clips were used in some rifles used during WWII... "
