SCAG ready to open regional office

Saturday, January 3, 2009 10:26 PM PST

The Southern California Association of Governments will open its new regional office in Imperial County on Wednesday.

Located at 703 Industry Way, Suite 1, in El Centro, the regional office will offer public meetings and workshops regarding SCAG’s plans and upcoming projects and serve an essential role in strengthening relationships with local planning partners.

“The establishment of this new regional office continues a strong partnership between SCAG and Imperial County,” said Hasan Ikhrata, executive director of SCAG. “It represents SCAG’s intent to connect in a real and meaningful way with elected officials, business and community leaders and local planning partners in our region. We are strongly committed to representing and serving all members throughout this area.”

“Regional planning does not take place in a vacuum,” said Richard Dixon, Lake Forest council member and SCAG president. “We want to strengthen our relationships with local government at all levels and generate greater interest and support for regional planning. You can expect to see more outreach activities, workshops and public meetings that will educate and provide information on how SCAG and regional planning aligns with the long-term growth plans of Imperial County while maintaining local control.”

“The opening of a SCAG regional office launches a new era of enhanced communication and cooperation between SCAG and Imperial County,” said Jon Edney, El Centro city councilman and SCAG second vice president. “This office will be very instrumental in our service to this community and our partnership with the entire SCAG region.”

SCAG has regional offices in Riverside, Orange and Ventura counties and will soon open an office in San Bernardino County.

SCAG is the nation’s largest metropolitan planning organization, representing six counties, 188 cities and more than 19 million residents. SCAG undertakes a variety of planning and policy initiatives to plan for a livable and sustainable Southern California now and in the future.
