Valley Police Beat: Deputy arrested Monday

Thursday, January 8, 2009 10:00 PM PST

BRAWLEY — An Imperial County sheriff’s deputy was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence at his D Street home here, a Brawley police official confirmed Thursday.

Deputy Kevin McGovern, 54, posted bond and was released from custody Monday following his 3 p.m. arrest.

Brawley police officers received a call to check on the well-being of someone at the home, said the official, who requested anonymity.

A preliminary investigation at the scene confirmed that a domestic violence incident had occurred, but the official said the victim escaped injury.

McGovern, who a source said works for the Sheriff’s Office’s civil division serving restraining orders, was arrested and booked at the county jail on one count of misdemeanor domestic violence.

Services for officer set

SEELEY — A Centinela State Prison correctional officer died while on duty Sunday, and authorities believe the cause of death was cardiac arrest, Administrative Lt. Richard Dubbe said Thursday.

Rosary and viewing for Arnold Obeso are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 795 S. La Brucherie Road in El Centro.

A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.

Obeso, 42, died Sunday after he collapsed while finishing his afternoon shift. Obeso had been a correctional officer at the prison since September 1996.

Car runs into power pole

A woman complained of pain early Thursday after her car plowed into a power pole in the 300 block of Main Street in El Centro.

Police think the unidentified woman may have fallen asleep at the wheel of her car, which had major front-end damage, said El Centro Police Lt. Paul Longoria.

The woman was not taken for treatment and no arrest was made. The bottom of the pole was sheared off in the 3:12 a.m. incident, Longoria said.

Man damages holding cell

WINTERHAVEN — A Yuma man suspected of possessing marijuana and having a loaded semiautomatic handgun under his car seat faces vandalism charges for allegedly tearing up the interior of a holding cell at the Imperial County sheriff’s station here, a sergeant said Thursday.

Jerrad Guajardo, 23, was arrested Tuesday night after he was questioned by sheriff’s deputies about 10 p.m., said Sgt. Scott Sheppeard.

Guajardo was a passenger in the vehicle parked at Yuma and Rodenbaugh roads in eastern Imperial County. Behind the wheel was Grace Livingston, 28, also of Yuma. The car’s headlights were flashing.

Deputies stopped to question the occupants because the scene appeared suspicious, Sheppeard said.

At the sheriff’s station, Sheppeard said, Guajardo became uncooperative, tearing off a toilet seat and pounding his hand on the floor of the cell.

If you dislike cops, and think they're all corrupt, what do you think would happen if all of a sudden, every single police officer, local or federal, called in sick for a week. Idiots like you would be forced to eat your words! "
