Big O Tires to close its doors

Thursday, January 8, 2009 10:00 PM PST

Big O Tires in El Centro is the latest local business to succumb to the slowed economy, ending 18 years of service to the Valley.

“People are just not spending money,” said store owner Glenn Rye. “It’s the economy, local and national.”

Rye will be closing the doors to the store later this month.

While Big O Tires is a national company, the stores are individually owned, meaning the local closing is not part of a national move.

Local business had slowed to about half of what it was over the past year, Rye said. He had already made deep cuts in staff, going from 10 employees to four.

He said his favorite thing about running Big O Tires had been the people.

“It was a great experience serving all my customers and contributing to the community over the years,” Rye said.

He said he plans to stay in El Centro and explore other career opportunities.

" dont go to far BUHS is the same has IID pink slips to teachers again but how about all the administrators and all the counselors the district could save teachers giving administrators pink slips and to some of the eight counselors too many of them. "

" This brings up a good point. What if the IID did put an end to providing vehicles to so many of its employees? Would this enable a rate reduction? I can understand "work related necessity", but how many times have we seen these vehicles in the Johnnie's Drive-thru? Personally, I plan on researching the plausibility of solar power for my home. I understand the start up is costly, but it may reduce the burden of the Energy Cost Adjustment that will NEVER go away. "

" The economy, it really is a shame that locals have to close because of the economy? ohh but if you go into IID you will find very expensive tv sets, furniture and the worst is that they get new ones almost every 1/2 year mmm, oh but it's work related, also you see these "public servants" driving the units that are only for work and that are gas paid with our tax money to there house or doing other things that are not work related, why can't they drive there personal car to and from work just like all of us do it, and then about 1/2 the city is all IID buildings, what for?
Oh well what to do. "

" What a shame; another local business taking the bullet for our politicians. Has anyone heard of a local, state, or federal employee receiving a pink slip because of the economy? Excluding El Boosh, of course. "
