El Centro Macy’s safe amid closures

Thursday, January 8, 2009 10:00 PM PST

El Centro’s Macy’s at the Imperial Valley Mall is not on the list of store closures just announced by the retail chain.

Macy’s is closing 11 of its 859 stores, a move that will cut 960 jobs.

Laura Smith, a spokeswoman for Macy’s based in San Francisco, said that no more closures were on the horizon.

“These are all the store closings,” Smith said.

Two stores are closing in Colorado, two in Pennsylvania and one each in California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Minnesota, Tennessee and Missouri.

Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren said in a news release that the chain typically closes as many as 10 stores a year “to prune underperforming locations.”

“The decision to close stores is difficult, and often occurs when the market changes, new competing shopping centers are opened nearby to existing older ones, or when customers change shopping habits,” Lundgren said.

The chain also reported a sales decline of 4 percent in stores open for at least one year.
