Tell us how you ended up in this line of work.
I was a general manager for a local television studio and people kept telling me I should open an advertising agency. When the time was right, I left my position with the station, sold my home, rented an apartment to gain the capital I needed and rented a small office in the C.A. Irving building on Eighth Street. In 1990 Spectrum Advertising was born.
What are memories from your career that stick out with you the most?
I had the fortitude and determination to start my business on my own. I take great pride in doing that. One of the best parts of my job, my business, is working with a person or a business with a desire to succeed. I enjoy building their brand, strategy, campaigns and seeing that person’s or business’ dreams of success come true.
What do you most like and least like about your work?
I most like seeing a great ad, TV spot or video from my company that turns out just stellar. I feel as though we hit our mark 110 percent. I least like errors. I am a perfectionist and errors, mistakes or oversights just irritate me.
What makes your business unique?
Although we do all types of advertising and video production we specialize in reaching the Hispanic population and I am proud of that. I am also a technology geek, so I also think the capabilities we have helps Spectrum to stand out from the crowd.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to open a business?
Get a plan and do your homework. Make sure there is a market for your business. Be committed to your own success and always make goals for you to achieve.
