Tell us how you ended up in this line of work.
I have always enjoyed participating in fitness related activities. Therefore, it was a natural progression to open a business I truly believed in and also enjoy doing. In the course of my life I have attended many types of gyms and fitness facilities but observed that many were not necessarily female friendly or had great customer service. I felt the Imperial Valley was ready for a full service “Women Only” health club and day spa with a motivating and inviting atmosphere as well as great customer service.
Describe what your business does.
Fitness Oasis strives to promote the importance of health and wellness. We all recognize that when you have your health you have everything. Regardless of your present level of fitness you can improve your health and your life.
Fitness Oasis provides women with the opportunity and encouragement to achieve their individual fitness goals. We help everyone be successful. We do this through providing varied, motivating and enjoyable group fitness classes such as pilates, zumba, yoga, weight training, kickboxing, bootcamp and cardio classes. We also have a swimming pool and aqua classes. Our weight training studio and cycling studio allow members to work at their own pace.
We cater to the active adult, senior adult, teenager and presently provide a kid’s zumba class. Utilizing our personal trainers and licensed dietician can also help in reaching an individual’s health and fitness goals. After a workout a members can also enjoy a therapeutic massage, a sports massage or a relaxation massage. We also provide spa quality manicures, pedicures and facials.
What are memories from your career that stick out with you the most?
The best memories I have are the heartfelt conversations and remarks I have received from my members thanking us for helping them overcome the intimidation factor in exercising. They also thank us for assisting them in lowering their blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing pain or arthritic symptoms, lowering stress levels and managing their diabetes. Also, when you help someone lose, 20, 30, 50 or even 100 pounds in a safe and realistic manner it is very rewarding.
What do you most like and least like about your work?
What I like most about my line of work is the interaction with my members. People who exercise seem to have a very positive aura and outlook on life. Positive energy and enthusiasm is contagious. I enjoy being at the club most of the day as well as most nights because I believe in being a hands-on owner but unfortunately that also translates into long and late hours spent at the club.
What makes your business unique?
I believe our business is unique because we focus on the health and personal needs of Women. All our services, equipment, programs and classes are designed to promote success in meeting personal fitness goals. We are keenly aware of the special needs of moms. We provide daycare during peak hours and have also incorporated a kid’s zumba class (ZumbAtomic) into our schedule. We have special discounts for senior citizens (Silver Sneakers Program) as well as mother/daughter discounted memberships. We strive to provide effective programs for all our members.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to open a business?
Find something you love to do and share it with others. If you feel you have a good business idea spend some time doing the appropriate research to determine need and viability. It’s always a good idea to have additional capital on hand for the difficult times. Believe in yourself and enthusiastically promote your product. Be a “hands-on” owner and make sure to provide great customer service. Most importantly always be honest, ethical and professional.
How do you give back to the local community?
Fitness Oasis gives back to the community by sponsoring several fund raisers each year. We have fund raising drives for breast cancer awareness, muscular dystrophy, Relay for Life, etc. We also donate memberships and services to schools, athletic organizations and local organizations so they may purchase equipment, uniforms or supplies.
