IMPERIAL — Local students raced through the Preble Building at the Imperial Valley Expo in search of the art projects they had made in honor of the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta.

Playing to this year’s theme, “Experience the Magic!” many students created colorful pieces of art that featured wizards and wands for all to see.

Tony Denton could not help but smile when he finally came across his artistic creation Tuesday, which featured a pair of basketball shoes.

“I worked on it with my class,” said Tony, a fifth-grade student at Corfman Middle School in El Centro. “It feels good to see something I helped make on display.”

Tony’s grandmother Rosemary Denton said she enjoyed seeing the artwork of the numerous schools on display.

“I think it’s really neat to have everything set up like this,” Denton, an El Centro resident, said. “You can appreciate the work that went into all the projects.”

Craig Casey, principal of J.W. Oakley Elementary School in Brawley, said he was glad to see the hard work of his students on display.

“We push standards and curriculum every day,” Casey said. “I know the students enjoyed putting the artwork together and I’m sure they’ll be excited to show it off when they come to the fair.”

Marci Mange, a teacher at the Freedom Academy of the Imperial Valley, said her students not only enjoyed creating the art, but putting it up as well.

“Our kids are home-schooled, so we made a trip out here and everyone had the chance to help put up the display,” Mange said. “They really enjoyed it. I think it’s a great exhibit to have because it promotes the arts and there appears to be a great turnout this year.”

The exhibit featured the creation of even the smallest students, such as the preschoolers at the Child and Youth Programs Center located at the Naval Air Facility El Centro.

“Each age group made their own little decorations that would tie in the fair’s theme,” said Kate Syms, CYP teacher. “They worked on it for about two weeks. It’s nice to see it all come together.”
