The Calexico High boys’ tennis team is clearly the team to beat this season.
The Bulldogs kicked off the second half of the Imperial Valley League season by beating Southwest High, 13-5, to improve to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in IVL.
“Southwest put up a pretty good fight. Our guys played very well,” Calexico head coach Xavier Rodriguez said. “Our singles continue to do outstanding, doubles continue to do better. … As always, our kids are putting in a lot of hard work.”
The Bulldogs singles squad is led by sophomore No. 1 singles player Raul De La Torre, who continues to dominate.
“That’s great,” he said of being undefeated. “We have some pressure because we’re still undefeated … we need to just keep it up and keep up the hard work.”
On Wednesday, De La Torre cruised past Southwest’s No. 1 Zev Dutta, 6-0, No. 2 Stephan Leon, 6-0, and No. 3 Deyran Paredes, 6-0.
His brother, No. 2 Daniel, and No. 3 Omar Brito also cruised, winning all of their games, 6-0.
In doubles, Calexico’s No. 2 team of Edgar Rubio and Adrian Meneses won two of three games, losing to Southwest’s No. 1 team of Daryan Flores and Mo Ham, 2-6, and beat No. 2 team of Cory Fitzsimmons and Gus Ramirez, 6-3, and No. 3 team of Sergio Zaragoza and Yash Chauban, 6-3.
“Being undefeated brings a lot of pressure to the team,” Rubio said. “We still have a lot of teams trying to beat us … we just need to play our game, work hard and we’ll win IVL.”
Also for Calexico doubles, the No. 1 team of Albert Torres and Kevin Kim lost to Flores/Ham, 0-6, Fitzsimmons/Ramirez, 2-6, and beat Zaragoza/Chauban, 6-0.
Calexico’s No. 3 team of Francisco Gomez and Christopher Martija lost to Flores/Ham, 0-6, lost to Fitzsimmons/Ramirez, 2-6 and lost to Zaragoza/Chauban, 4-6.
