CALEXICO — The Calexico High boys’ soccer team scored two minutes before its Imperial Valley League game against Southwest High ended here to record the 1-0 win.
Calexico senior forward Kevin Campos scored the game’s only goal when he deflected a hard-ground pass from teammate Chris Aguilera off a set-piece play about five yards outside of the goalkeeper box.
“By chance the ball landed at my feet and it was a goal,” Campos said. “It felt good to score.”
The one-goal game perfectly describes the close, intense and hard-fought battle by both squads.
Neither dominated or had many shots on goal, with Calexico having a slight edge on shots.
“Southwest played their game, excellent, excellent plays that their coach has, fast-paced game,” Calexico High head coach Javier Bernal said. “It just came down to that last play … we scored and they didn’t.”
For the Eagles, losing the game in the last two minutes didn’t sit too well.
“It’s horrible that by one mistake in the last second, on a set piece, we lose,” Southwest head coach Rafael Contreras said. “The way league is so competitive, this could be a key game.”
Calexico improves to 2-0-1 in league and 7-3-3 overall. The Bulldogs will play at Brawley Union High at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Southwest (5-6-4, 1-1-1 IVL) will play at Central Union High at the same time and day.
