CALEXICO — One of last year’s suggestions at the inaugural Calexico Sports Summit was to provide more hands-on events.

The Calexico Recreation Department answered with two clinics — soccer and basketball — that were a part of Saturday’s second annual event held at Calexico High.

“Overall, I think it was very successful,” Community Services Director Sandra Tauler said.

The event was started last year with the idea of building better communication between the various youth athletic leagues offered in the city. And to provide better education about nutrition and other areas surrounding sports to parents, coaches and athletes.

“I hope they got inspired to work together, the coaches and parents, and make the children’s athletic experience more positive,” Tauler said.

Saturday’s event included guest speakers like Gerald Robinson of Imperial, a former collegiate all-star football player who now dedicates his time to helping other Valley athletes reach the collegiate level.

“We had some awesome speakers,” Tauler said. “Robinson talked a lot about drills and the kids got a good workout, you could tell by their faces that they were loving it.”

The only drawback was less public participation than expected.

“I wish we had more participants but I think that will build as we continue to do it,” Tauler said.
