Christmas festival of song is spectacular

The event, under the direction of Imperial Valley Master Chorale Director Denny Lang, kicked off with a medley of Christmas carols before moving on to “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” in which the audience was invited to sing along.
After welcoming the audience to the program, Imperial Valley Choral Society President Ann Horne remarked that they had a “singing Valley,” and that “you don’t have to pay for instruments if you teach singing.”
And sing they did.
The Master Chorale, which is composed of Valley residents — and some winter visitors — performed “He Is Born,” “African Noel” and “The Hands that First Held Mary’s Child,” among many other songs.
“The Master Chorale’s members have been singing for many years,” said Robertta Burns, IVCS treasurer. “Some are music teachers who have retired, some just like to sing.”
Up and coming vocalists were also given an opportunity to sing for the community.
Imperial High School singers harmonized for three songs, including “What Child is This.”
The Junior Master Chorale was not short of enthusiasm. This young bunch sang “Child of God” and “Hanukkah Tonight,” and was rewarded with the loudest applause thus far into the program.
The evening’s focus turned again to the Master Chorale, which concluded the program by fanning into the audience while singing “Peace, Peace” and “Silent Night” simultaneously. The songs, which sound different from each other when sung independently, blended together beautifully as the church lights dimmed.
“Peace, peace on earth,” they sang. “This is the time for joy. Now let us all sing together, peace, peace, peace on Earth.”
