IMPERIAL — The DePaoli Sports Complex at Imperial Valley College was filled with hundreds of enthusiastic middle school students in honor of this year’s Career Pathways event.
The event included a number of different activities and speeches geared toward empowering the students about their lives and futures.
“My favorite part of the assembly is when they had a dance-off,” said Annaluisa Soto, a 12-year-old seventh grader at Holtville Middle School.
The first portion of the event featured the junior high morning madness put on by the I Think Big Organization out of San Diego.
The pep/assembly-style presentation entertained students with songs, short videos and discussions.
“I liked the entire assembly,” said Steven Johnson, a 13-year-old eighth grader at San Pascual Valley Middle School. “It was really fun to hear all the stories. It was exciting.”
The second half of the event featured presentations by some of the Valley’s workforce.
“We have a variety of different organizations here because we want students to know about the different career opportunities in the Valley,” said Wendy Prewett, program coordinator with the Imperial Valley Regional Occupational Program. “We like to target students at an early age because it gets them thinking about the future.”
IVROP has been organizing the event for the last 14 years and hopes to continue putting it on in the years to come.
“It’s a great event that is meant to inspire the county’s youth,” said Ivan Soto, IVROP environmental technician. “We have photographers and biologists and a lot of other presenters that will hopefully inspire the kids.”
