A thunderstorm and dust storm moved their way through the county Sunday evening, bringing rain and winds in excess of 60 miles per hour in some areas. A flood advisory was also in effect for the latter part of the evening.

The storm had originated in Mexico and moved north of the border into the Yuma region before making its way west into the Valley. The storms were expected to dissipate around midnight, a National Weather Service meteorologist said.

A light pole had reportedly fallen about 7 p.m. onto the right side of the southbound lanes of Highway 111 near McCabe Road in Calexico, according to the California Highway Patrol Web site.

Ogilby Road north of Interstate 8 in eastern Imperial County was also closed due to heavy flooding, the Highway Patrol reported.

Zero visibility stemming from heavy rain also was reported on Highway 78 near Glamis, the Highway Patrol reported.

The storms, which were described as “not especially intense” by NWS meteorologist Mike McLane, also affected large parts of southeast California.
