IMPERIAL — Valley residents head to the fair for a variety of reasons like rides or different booths, but still a number make their destination the food booths to get their fair food fixes.

Two of those who went Wednesday to the fair for the food and fun were Janneth Vaca and Ada Vanessa Cabuto. Soon after the fair opened for the day, the two stopped at the funnel cake stand to try a new dish.

Vaca came to try out the red velvet funnel cake, which she said was scrumptious.

“It’s just once a year,” she said. “We have to take advantage of it.”

Cabuto agreed.

“It’s fried,” she said of her favorite, the corn dog. “There’s just something about fried food. It makes it taste better, or maybe because you shouldn’t have it.”

There are a number of people who come to the event saying they are just there for the food, specifically funnel cakes, said Scott McClurg with Iron Skillet Funnel Cake. And this year has been the best year yet for the fried dough confection.

“It’s something you can’t get everywhere,” he said of the fair food’s appeal. “You get it once a year if you come to the fair.”

And the funnel cakes have fresh ingredients: strawberries, whipped cream and more, he said.

Still others stop at the food booths as only part of the whole experience of heading to the fair.

DeShawn and Gloria Holmes stopped at one of the booths near the midway carnival. The fair food is pricey, but there are some good dishes, like corn dogs and kettle corn, DeShawn said. Maybe not the crazy stuff like deep-fried cheeseburgers and bacon-covered donuts.

Gloria added that she liked everything at the fair, especially the ice cream.
