Sophomore Jalyn McClain threw a no-hitter and senior Christina Contreras hit a home run as the Central Union High softball team defeated Holtville High 7-1 here Friday night.
“I just want to do the best I can for my team,” McClain said. “I felt confident in my team and myself.”
McClain struggled early, walking Holtville Vikings lead-off batter Liz Castro in the top of the first inning and then throwing enough wild pitches to get Castro home for an early 1-0 lead.
After that snafu, however, McClain collected herself and threw the ball much more accurately, striking out nine batters while allowing zero hits and just two more walks on the night.
At the plate, the Central Spartans were dominate, answering Castro’s early run with a double by lead-off batter Desire Estrada.
An error at third base allowed Jere Silva to get on board, setting things up for a three-run shot over the fence by Contreras.
“I think we came out to win,” coach Marissa Guzman said. “We started on a great note; we just need to work on continuing that the whole game.”
Central was skunked in the second inning, but returned to form in the third, with Silva, Contreras, McClain, and Jalen Morquecho all scoring to give the Spartans a 7-1 which they would hold onto for the win.
“The keys to our victory were communication and our defense,” Contreras said. “We did good after coming back from (Tuesday’s) loss to Imperial.
“Beating Holtville by six showed that we did pretty good with our hits,” she said.
The Vikings (2-3, 0-1 Imperial Valley League) is scheduled to play Oaks Christian High in San Diego this morning at 11 am, while Central (5-4, 1-1 IVL) will face Clovis North High.
