In the past 15 years, Sandy Noujaim has seen the Imperial Valley Music Educators Association Halftime Festival grow from a small event to one of the biggest nights of music in the community.
“I have been coming every year, and I have continually been impressed with how creative and different all the bands are,” Noujaim, the athletic director at Central Union High School, said. “Each program is so unique, and I’m glad we have this event so everyone can see that.”
Prior to the start of this year’s show, hundreds of community members gathered at Central’s Cal Jones Field in anticipation of each of the band’s performance.
“This event is always exciting,” said Danny Silva, an El Centro resident. “The ambiance is incredible and everyone is very supportive of all the bands, which is nice.”
Holtville High School band member Vivian Lee said it was this camaraderie that made her enjoy the event.
“It gives us the chance to be with our own kind,” said Vivian, a 13-year-old baritone player.
For many students, the show was also the last time they would be performing with their respective bands.
“It’s so exciting yet sad at the same time,” said Gabby Flores, a 17-year-old CUHS Sparteen co-captain. “We put in so much work throughout the year and I’m just proud of the way we performed. I’m going to miss this.”
While some students like Gabby were enjoying their last performance, others were trying to put their nerves aside and get through their first.
“I was so nervous when I saw all the people,” said Heidi Jimenez, a 13-year-old bell player in the Calexico High School band. “But I think the second time we performed I wasn’t as scared.”
First-time performer Andres Cisneros said he was happy with the way his band performed and was glad he had the opportunity to see all the performances.
“We all work really hard, and we know the work it takes to create a halftime show,” said Andres, a 17-year-old trombonist in the Holtville High band. “Not only do we get to perform in front of a huge crowd, but in front of other band members who know what we’ve been through. It’s a great feeling.”
