Various sidewalks improvements and pavement adjustments are poised for the area surrounding Heber Junior High School as the project was approved to be sent out to bid by the Imperial County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.
About three blocks on Heber Avenue just south of Heber Road, as well as most of 11th Street and 14th Street are part of the rehabilitation project, according to a report to the board.
The project came for the board’s approval after a year in design, said Public Works Director Bill Brunet to the board as he explained there were issues with relocating water services and also gas line issues. The project, worth nearly $700,000, is funded by Safe Right to School grants.
During the meeting Supervisor Jack Terrazas asked if the sidewalk on the property lines near the first two blocks on Heber Avenue coming from north to south were going to be removed in addition to the project.
Brunet said it would and added that “we want construction to commence after school is out. That’s one of our coordination efforts.”

Here are three things that happened in Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting:
1 — The contract between the county and Wood Brothers Inc. for the final closure phase of the Brawley landfill was approved by the board. The final phase of this closure will cost the county about $7.6 million.
2 — The addition of six firefighters to the Imperial County Fire Department was approved by the board. These positions are funded by solar projects as stated in conditional-use permits, according to a report to the board.
3 — The board approved a six-day travel for Supervisor Michael Kelley and County Executive Officer Ralph Cordova through its consent agenda. Kelley and Cordova will attend meetings and seminars in China to promote economic development in Imperial County. The invitation came from a development company called Pacificland International Development and the C-A Education Development Foundation, the latter is a nonprofit which will pay all travel costs, according to a report to the board.
