Vikings squash Hornets, 17-4
CALIPATRIA — The Holtville High boys’ baseball team overwhelmed Calipatria High, 17-4, in a nonleague game here Tuesday.
For the Vikings, pitcher Alex Muñoz pitched five innings and totaled nine strikeouts, while Josh Osuna went 4 for 4, with two doubles.
Holtville will next play Yuma Catholic High in Yuma on Friday at 1 p.m., while Calipatria hosts Gila Ridge High of Yuma on Thursday at 3:30.
Tigers maul Patriots, 7-3
IMPERIAL — The Imperial High boys’ baseball team opened their season with a 7-3 win over visiting Christian High of El Cajon on Wednesday, the first day of the Christian Patriot Invitational.
Tigers’ pitcher Bryan Garrett gave up only two runs on six hits during his six innings on the mound, racking up eight strikeouts along the way.
At the plate, Mickey Lopez went 2 for 3 with two doubles. Garrett also went 2 for 3, with a single and a run scored. Mark Benedict went 1 for 2 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Imperial (1-0) will travel to take on Mountain Empire High of Pine Valley on the second day of tourney action on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
Eagles shut out by Cougars, 8-0
ESCONDIDO — The Southwest High girls’ softball team found themselves outmatched by Steele Canyon High of Spring Valley, 8-0, on Tuesday, the second day of the Cougar Classic tournament.
For the Eagles, Valeria Torres had two hits, while Mackenzie Fannin, Natalia Larranaga, Maci Lerno, and Keana Tamayo each had one hit apiece.
Southwest (0-1) plays Mission Hills High of San Marcos this evening at 5 p.m.
