Alejandro Rivera said he never realized he wanted to be an author until he was about 13 years old.
“I was always writing stuff when I was a kid and drawing pictures,” said Alejandro, a 15-year-old freshman at Southwest High School in El Centro. “It was just something I did for fun.”
When Alejandro realized he could use his talents to create fantasy tales, he began seeing writing as a potential career.
“I really like the Harry Potter series, A Series of Unfortunate Events and Dr. Seuss books,” Alejandro said.
On Saturday, Alejandro and other teen authors had the opportunity to learn what it takes to become an author during the Teen Author Boot Camp at the Southwest High library.
The boot camp was presented by Utah Valley University via live video conference.
“I learned that other people are going through the same things I am,” Alejandro said. “I felt like I could relate to what they were saying because they talking about day dreaming and getting easily distracted.”
Martha Delgado said she aspires to write dramas one day and was interested in attending the event to learn how to make her dream a reality.
“So far I’ve learned that rejection happens,” Martha, a 15-year-old Southwest High sophomore said. “I’m glad I came, the information is helpful.”
David Burt, Southwest High library media teacher, said he wanted to offer the boot camp to students to give them the drive to start or finish a novel or short book.
“I know a lot of kids who like to write, so I thought it be great for them to learn from other young authors,” Burt said. “Hopefully after the presentations they’ll have the ability to go home and write knowing they can create something wonderful.”
