SEELEY – In an effort to bring more awareness to the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of the Imperial Valley, community members were invited to attend the organization’s annual campout at Sunbeam Lake over the weekend.

Attendees had the opportunity to live the Boy Scout way for four hours and participate in activities such as archery, canoeing and bottle rocket shooting.

Imperial resident Lupe Esqueda said she learned of the event through a co-worker and decided to take her son.

“(My son) is a little shy, but I think he is enjoying himself,” Esqueda said. “So far he’s gone canoeing, which he really liked. We’re excited to see what other activities he can participate in.”

Alex Valenzuela said he was happy his aunt suggested he attend the event after he participated in the archery event.

“I’ve never used a bow and arrow, but I liked it,” Alex, a 12-year-old El Centro resident, said. “I was surprised I hit the target a couple of times. So far this is the only event I’ve done, but I’ll probably try canoeing a little later.”

The event was important for a number of reasons, namely to give the local Boy Scouts the opportunity to interact with the community said Blake Miles, district chairman of the Imperial Valley.

“Each unit from around the Valley is in charge of a specific activity that showcases what the Boy Scouts is all about,” Miles said. “It’s also a fun time for family members to get out and have a good time.”

The event was also an opportunity for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts to earn patches and merit badges said Barbara Deol, an El Centro unit cubmaster.

“There is a little something for everyone to do,” Deol said. “Hopefully this will get a few more kids interested in Boy Scouts.”
