IMPERIAL – Visitors to this year’s fair are invited to “Experience the Magic” as part of its annual theme with special guests including multiple magicians and a hypnotist.
Performances by Adam the Great, Godfrey the Magician and Tyzen the hypnotist captivated audiences of all ages with multiple performances daily since the fair opened Friday.
Parents and children filled benches around the corner stage within the Preble Building Sunday for the “Kids Magic Camp.”
The interactive show began with the audience being asked to raise their hands while being sworn into the camp, promising “never to tell how this trick is done for less than $5.”
The audience enthusiastically applauded as Godfrey the Magician went through one magic trick after another for the kids to show off to their friends.
“It was amazing and also the magic was really cool and next time I hope he makes me fly,” said Hugh Vandeweghe, 7.
“I think the magic person was really cool and can do a lot of magic tricks,” his cousin Maggie Benson exclaimed, citing the disappearing cups trick as her favorite part of the magic camp.
Godfrey the Magician of San Diego is doing three performances a day in addition to the magic kids’ camp while also performing random magic tricks throughout the day at the fair.
One of his acts even features a person “floating” midair.
He began doing magic when he was 7 years old and professionally since 1983. He has asthma, and since he often couldn’t run in P.E. class, he went to the library and found a book on magic, piquing his interest.
“I like teaching this since it helps them with their self-esteem, confidence, and if they get excited about it, they need to read a lot to learn about the tricks,” he said. “It’s exciting anytime you can get kids reading.”
The magician even made a prediction before the fair started about what the Imperial Valley Press’ headline will be March 5. He discussed the prediction on-air with radio station KXO and wrote his predicted headline on a piece of paper before mailing it via UPS to the KXO office.
It will be revealed whether the headline is correct Tuesday.
Whether you believe in magic or hypnotism, the fair offers family-friendly entertainment this year every day.
