Since it first opened its doors several years ago, the Calexico Cultural Arts Center has played host to a number of functions that have served to bring the community together. That the number of such events and activities continues to grow only serves as a reminder of the importance of such a venue.

Yet we have to wonder whether any patrons had ever considered the genesis of the center. While there may have been a good number of people familiar with the center’s history, that number is sure to increase now that the center has been renamed in honor of the driving force behind its establishment.

With nothing more than an idea and a vision, former Calexico Councilwoman Carmen Durazo would help transform an old coffee shop along Heffernan Avenue into the cultural amenity it is today. That she was able to carry out her vision at a time when public funds were hard to come by also serves as a testament to her determination.

So long as services and development remain the top priorities for cities, it is understandable that the promotion and expansion of arts programs and infrastructure remain something of an afterthought. But in the case of Carmen Durazo, the arts were given proper attention and prominence.

In addition to her role in the center’s founding, Durazo was also instrumental in establishing the Calexico Arts Commission and the city’s Arts Council. Wanting nothing more than to provide a nurturing environment for local talent, Durazo’s efforts are the types of endeavors that deserve community-wide support and kudos. Best of all, her efforts go a long way toward boosting the social capital that provide for a better quality of life.

But for those who have ever attempted such a labor of love, garnering recognition hardly is ever at the forefront of their minds. They do what they do simply because they feel they must. And when the results turn out as they have with the arts center, it’s hard to argue with.

In that vein, we like the fact that Durazo made it clear to those assembled at the dedication ceremony that she is by no means finished with her crusade to bolster the arts scene in the city and Valley.
