Saturday may be Imperial’s lucky day.
Forecasters are saying there should be a break Saturday in the blustery, cool weather sweeping through the Imperial Valley in recent days. And that is the day Imperial will have its Tri-Tip Cook-Off and various associated events.
This will be the second year for the Tri-Tip Cook-Off, so it certainly isn’t yet approaching the grandeur of the venerable Holtville Athletic Club Rib Cook-Off, although with time it may. After all, many people in the Valley love tri-tip even more than they do ribs.
People attending the Imperial cook-off, which will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be allowed to sample the entries by buying $1 tickets. Those purchasing $5 worth of tickets will be provided a ballot to vote for the people’s choice award.
The people’s choice winner will be awarded a $750 prize, and those taking the judges’ awards will take home $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third. The judges will also hand out a $500 showmanship award to the cook or team of cooks who are the biggest … well, hams wouldn’t be the appropriate word when we’re talking about a tri-tip cook-off.
Twenty-five percent of the money raised from the event will be donated to the city of Imperial’s library, Parks and Recreation and Police Athletic League programs.
The day’s schedule will start with a parade at 10 a.m. featuring Imperial High’s Pride of Imperial marching band, classic cars, floats, an Old West re-enactment troupe from Yuma called Los Comancheros and much more.
The program will continue at Eager Park in downtown Imperial with another in a series of Market Days, where, along with the cook-off, there will be live music, delicious pies from Julian available for purchase, fire dancers, stilt walkers and many people’s favorite feature at such events, a beer garden.
It should be a day packed with small-town fun.
Let’s just hope the weather holds up.
