There are many things that attract large crowds to the Imperial Valley Business Showcase each year: new businesses showing what they can offer, established businesses showcasing their wares and services, and community organizations and districts displaying what they can and will do.

Then there is the free food.

Yes, some locals go the annual I.V. Business Showcase largely for the gratis grub. Prepared by local restaurants, the fine cuisine alone makes the showcase worth a trip to the Imperial Valley Expo in Imperial for many visitors.

But there is so much more the showcase offers to the public and to local businesses and organizations. It allows mingling between businesspeople and potential customers and the general passing of knowledge about what is out there in the Valley in commerce and services.

And when it is all under one roof, as is the case each year with the Business Showcase, it is impressive how much actually is available for the people of the Valley. This year’s event, the 15th annual, involved around 100 businesses from all over the Valley and was sponsored, as usual, by the Imperial Valley Joint Chambers of Commerce.

The event also included organizations such as the Joint Strike Fighter Coalition, which is working to get a fighter jet squadron based at Naval Air Facility El Centro and was gathering signatures of support for that effort, and the Imperial Valley Film Commission, which was promoting both its own annual film festival and the Film Forward festival it stages locally in conjunction with the Sundance Institute.

Also on hand were representatives from El Centro promoting the city’s business incubator program, which provides office-like spaces for small businesses.

These are just a few examples of the many businesses and groups at this year’s Business Showcase. If it all sounds like a fun way to see the cornucopia of opportunities the Imperial Valley has to offer, that is exactly what the Imperial Valley Business Showcase is … that and some really fine free food.
