Few things in Imperial County are as widely anticipated and done with such painstaking preparation as the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta, which kicks off at noon today at the Imperial Valley Expo in Imperial.
Thousands of hours have been spent preparing for the coming days, from the coordination efforts of fair board members and staff to the thousands of local youngsters whose work in the past several months will come to fruition soon.
The 10 days of the fair offer a microcosm of life in the Imperial Valley, from the flurry of activity in the barns to the businesses, agencies and political and religious organizations that are represented in the Preble Building, Casa de Mañana and Plaza de la Cultura. The fair is a blend of all that Imperial County represents, the place to see and be seen.
This year we especially look forward to the tribute to Dr. James Thompson, the beloved veterinarian who died in a plane crash in October near Tucson. Doc’s Farm is an educational animal and crop showroom where visitors will find animals in various stages of development. The exhibit will feature signage informing fair-goers about Imperial County agriculture, and what grows in local fields, telling “the journey from the field to the table,” a fair representative said.
On the midway, children of all ages will have their pick of carnival rides, from those for the thrill-seekers to kinder, gentler rides for the little ones.
Many familiar with what the fair has to offer look forward to standard fare like the Imperial Valley Gem and Mineral Society’s building, or the quilts, flowers and photos on display in other areas.
No matter how many baubles can be bought at the many booths that line the fairgrounds, or the numerous carnival attractions offering thrilling rides, there is no escaping that agriculture still reigns supreme in Imperial County.
Join us as we “Experience the Magic!” at this year’s California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta. Our booth is right at the north entrance to the Preble Building.
