The first phase of a major road rehabilitation for several county roads could be awarded by the Imperial County Board of Supervisors today.

So-called Phase I will cover about 20 miles of county roads but the total rehabilitation project will cover about 74 miles, said Public Works Director Bill Brunet.

If approved by the board, Phase I will be awarded to Pyramid Construction and Aggregates Inc., according to a report to the board which notes the contract is worth nearly $3 million.

Phase I encompasses various county roads including Pitzer Road from Fawcett Road to Highway 86. Fawcett Road will be rehabilitated as well from Dogwood Road to Ware Road.

Barbara Road, from Carr to Zenos roads are part of the list as well. Moreover, Bennett Road is included in this phase, said Brunet who hoped this road to be rehabilitated before the air show in March.

Once a contract is approved, it takes about a month for work to begin, said Brunet. He added that advertising bids for Phase II is likely to come before the board in a couple of weeks.

Funding for this project comes from Local Transportation Authority bonds. The LTA is responsible for administering Measure D tax revenue.

Along with the county, Brawley, Calipatria, Calexico, and the city of Imperial were part of a bond issuance last year worth some $59 million.

The county’s portion of the issuance is about $20 million.

County seeks Internet grant

On a separate agenda item, the county’s librarian hopes to apply for a grant that would subsidize broadband Internet for some 2,000 households.

If cleared by the board, the county will compete to get California Emerging Technology Grant, which gives about $220,000 for two years.

The grant targets seniors, veterans and residents who consider English as a second language to bridge the digital divide, according to a report to the board.
