Every year the AARP Tax Aid program has volunteers to help do our taxes. They usually set up at the El Centro Library or at the Community Center and usually start advertising with Time Warner on the public announcement channel but nothing has shown up yet. I've called both the library and the community center and neither have any information. Can you please help me find out if they are volunteering this year, and if so where? – Tax filer, El Centro
We had initially tried to answer the above Probe question last week and weren’t able to confirm whether or not the AARP Tax Aid program was going to set up shop at the newly opened library.
As it turns out, AARP volunteers will not be offering free tax services this year. But, Campesinos Unidos has stepped up to the plate and beginning Feb. 14 will be offering free tax services at the El Centro Public Library. We’re told that volunteers will be on site on Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. Exact details were kind of scarce as of this writing, but a library representative did state that free tax services would indeed become available. We can’t say for certain how long these services would be offered, but in the past they had carried over into mid-April.
As for the AARP volunteers, the library staffer we spoke with wasn’t able to say why the group no longer was able to provide their services. For further information about the tax services call the library at 760-337-4565.
