Central Union High won the 20th annual Copa Del Valle against Calexico High on Tuesday in El Centro.
The game officially ended in a scoreless tie and goes on both team's records as a tie. For the purposes of finding a winner of the Cup, both took shots from the penalty marker in which Central won, 5-3.
Across town at Southwest High, the Eagles and Brawley Union High finished 2-2 in league action Tuesday.
The tie ends Central’s hopes of clinching sole possession of the league title. With the tie, Central is now 7-2-3 with 24 points while Calexico moves to 5-1-5 with 20 points. At Southwest, the tie moves Brawley to 7-1-3 with 24 points and the Eagles to 5-1-5 with 20 points.
The bad news for the Spartans is their league season is over while Calexico, Southwest and Brawley still have one game left in league.
The Wildcats play at Holtville High at 6 p.m. Thursday while Calexico plays at Palo Verde Valley High at 5 p.m. Thursday and Southwest plays at Imperial High at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The Wildcats hold the upper hand. A win or tie for the Wildcats on Thursday secures them sole possession of the league title. A win would improve them to 27 points while a tie to 25 points. The best the Eagles and Bulldogs can muster is 23 points.
