IMPERIAL — After months of studying, students from across the Valley showcased their health and medical skills during the fifth annual Skills Festival and Quiz Bowl on Wednesday evening.
Sponsored by the Imperial Valley Regional Occupational Program, the event brought more than 150 students from various nursing and medical programs to Imperial High School to participate in the annual health competition.
“The event is important because it gives the students practice for something they are going to continue using in their future,” Lupe Garcia, IVROP program assistant and event coordinator said.
With five local health groups competing in seven different categories, the competition was intense for the young medical minds.
“It helps you develop friendships with different people from different schools and you really learn more about health because you learn to concentrate and study hard,” said Rosalia Tanory, 17, of Brawley Union High School’s Health Occupations Students of America program.
“Everybody wants to win and it’s really competitive out here.”
The competition challenged the students on an array of health topics, including medical terminology, dental science and nursing assistant, as well as medical math.
Having studied hard on a variety of health subjects, Imperial High School student Minerva Calles, 17, used the skills she learned as part of the IVROP certified nursing assistant program to help her team win this year’s quiz bowl.
“The competition is more about knowledge and team,” Minerva said. “I’m really proud and happy we were able to accomplish this.”
With awards handed out to first-place winners, many students walked away with their minds set on next year’s competition.
