For the transfer center staff at Imperial Valley College, the No. 1 priority is to see all of its students progress toward the next phase of their education.
While some students struggle with what they want to study and where they want to go, Beatriz Avila said it’s all part of the transfer application process.
“We want students to come in with a goal,” Avila, an academic counselor at IVC, said. “Some students struggle to figure out what it is they want, but that’s why we’re here.”
Avila said she picks students’ brains to try and to help them decide on a major or where they might see themselves after IVC.
“I tell students that choosing a major and transferring is like shopping,” Avila said. “It’s about taking ownership of their future and making the best choice for them.”
Transfer Center Director Veronica Soto said a common question students pose is how to transfer out of IVC in a timely manner.
“I always tell students they don’t have to graduate from IVC to transfer,” Soto said. “The goal should be to transfer after two years.”
Soto said one of the keys to transferring in two years is utilizing the resources the college had to offer.
“Students often make the mistake of relying on their friends for vital information,” she said. “The application process varies from each school and state. The more students come in to see us and educate themselves on deadlines and transfer requirements the better off they’ll be.”
