BRAWLEY — Donovin Buck gave up just one run through seven innings, as his Brawley Union High baseball team defeated Sweetwater High of San Diego, 4-1, here Friday night at Wiest Field.
“It’s amazing what happens when you get great tempo on the mound,” Brawley Wildcats coach Pedro Carranza said. “We had some clutch hits and the baseball gods looked our way.”
Brawley was the first to score, with junior lead-off batter C.J. Perez being brought in thanks to senior Jason Sanchez’s single in the bottom of the first inning.
The Sweetwater Devils struck back in the top of the third, when James Zarate was brought home off a double to right field by Victor Ramirez, tying the game at 1-1.
“I try to tell my teammates to never let errors bother them,” Buck said. “All my stuff was clicking tonight, so when that run got in I just didn’t let it affect me.
“I just kept playing my game,” the junior said.
At that point, Buck had given up three hits in as many innings; he would give up just one more the rest of game, with five strikeouts notched for the game.
The Wildcats separated themselves from their visitors in the bottom of the fifth, when an RBI double by Sanchez brought in sophomore Tristan Carranza.
Sanchez himself would score in the fifth thanks to a fielding error, with a sacrifice fly by senior Izar Mendez in the bottom of the sixth scoring Perez as the last run of the game, giving Brawley the 4-1 win.
“It felt good,” Sanchez said of his batting. “The last two games, we haven’t really been hitting. So I just really wanted to get our hitting going, to help out my team,” he said.
The win evens out Brawley’s record at 3-3 on the season ahead of Monday’s home game against Palo Verde Valley High.
