CALEXICO — Calexico Unified School District has suspended its declared impasse with the district’s teachers’ union and plans to return to negotiations Monday.
The board voted 3-1 in closed session during a special meeting Thursday night.
Calexico Unified board member Joong Kim was the dissenting vote while board member Gloria Romo was absent.
The impasse was declared by the district in December.
Associated Calexico Teachers’ representatives said they weren’t given a chance to give a counterproposal before the declaration.
District officials have said agreements have been made with two of its three employment groups as it looks at cuts in an attempt to balance its budget.
The certificated employees, or teachers, are the last group in negotiations.
$850,000 denied
Calexico Unified also voted 3-1 on Thursday to deny a claim by a former employee that she was wrongfully terminated.
Kim said he wanted to table the item to investigate it more closely.
Leticia Cota filed a claim for $850,000 against the district. She was a former counselor for the district laid off this past summer.
“I was selected for termination in retaliation for opposing practices which were illegal and for discriminatory reasons,” she writes in the claim form.
Cota lists economic damages at $500,000 and non-economic damages at $350,000. She was not present at Thursday night’s meeting.
