CALEXICO — Nonprofits that wish to sell fireworks here this year must turn in applications and fees to the city manager’s office by noon April 3.

Calexico changed its municipal code last year to allow the sale and use of safe and sane fireworks during designated time periods.

Firework sales applicants will be notified by May 15 whether their applications were approved, and no more than five permits will be issued.

If there are any permits available after priority organizations have been considered, more permits may be given at the discretion of the city manager and granted in a lottery on or before April 16 by the city clerk’s office.

Nonprofits must be organized and established for at least a year before filing an application, must have a main permanent meeting place in the city and have at least 20 members with a majority of them city residents.

The nonprofit’s activities also must be primarily for the benefit of the city and its residents.

While two or more qualifying nonprofits can apply for a permit as a joint venture, each one must submit a separate application.

Applications not properly completed or submitted without required fees won’t be considered.

The city manager’s office is located in Calexico City Hall, 608 Heber Ave.

Visit www.calexico.ca.gov or Calexico City Hall for instructions, application forms, fee list and schedule of important dates for the fireworks stand permit and inspection process.
