MEXICALI—Every year thousands of people visit the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California International Book Fair and this year is expected to be no different.

The fair started Thursday evening and runs until Tuesday.

“Every year we try to do something different and grow,” said Sulema Reyes, fair committee member.

Children workshops have been expanded this year and some 10,000 are expected to attend, Reyes said.

And for the adults, there are 300 publishing houses in attendance, many coming from the United States and Europe.

“This is an international book fair” and books are available in various languages, she said, so there is no language barrier and no fee entrance either.

Aside from book sales and book presentations, there are art displays, conferences and round tables scheduled throughout the day, every day.

And though Thursday seemed to be slow during the day, the event was expected to pick up in the evening, after its official inauguration.

Still, students like Aline Estrada, 27, were already walking the aisles, browsing at books.

“I have to walk around before it fills with people,” Estrada said in Spanish.

Estrada, who is doing her doctoral studies in architecture, was looking for books on economics, tourism, and sustainable development, she said.

“Yes, I know exactly what I am looking for,” Estrada said, “and because my eyes can’t deal with the computer screen anymore, it’s time for books.”
