Sentencing for the Calexico man who pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his friend in December was continued until next week.
Victor Rangel was ordered to return Wednesday for sentencing. He was at first arrested by Calexico police on suspicion of murder in connection with the Dec. 15 killing of Marc Saucedo at his Blair Avenue home. But the Imperial County District Attorney’s Office instead filed a charge of involuntary manslaughter against Rangel, who entered his plea in January.
Rangel’s defense attorney Raj Singh said a retired visiting judge, Ernest Borunda, initially took Rangel’s plea but was not present during the hearing in jail court. Rangel, who is behind bars, faces a five-year prison term.
The continuance was granted in order to have Imperial County Superior Court Judge Matias Contreras contact Borunda to see if his indicated sentence is still something he wants to go with, Singh said.
Contreras would then sentence Rangel according to the five-year prison sentence Borunda called for only if he confirms it, Singh said.
