BRAWLEY — A local man could face charges of attempted kidnapping for his alleged role in trying to grab a 13-year-old boy as he was walking to Del Rio Community School last week.
The suspect, 40-year-old Armando Meraz, was also arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted sexual assault.
Meraz allegedly made sexually explicit comments to the boy, who managed to get away from him and run to school in order to alert officials, according to a press statement Brawley police released Monday.
Police officers checked the area around the I Street school and located Meraz a few blocks away, according to the statement.
Meraz’s alleged victim made a positive identification. Meraz was arrested and booked into the county jail, where he was still being held with bail set at $100,000 as of press time Monday.
Brawley police said in the press statement that Friday’s incident appears to be isolated and that there have been no other reports of any similar crimes in the city.
Anyone with information about the incident involving Meraz or any other unreported incidents can call the Brawley Police Department at 760-351-7777.
Brawley police did not publicly disclose information about the Friday incident until Monday.
