A preliminary hearing for the man charged with the fatal stabbing of an El Centro resident last year was set Friday for Tuesday.
Defendant Javier Romo was ordered to appear Tuesday for the hearing that would see if there is sufficient evidence to have him stand trial for the Jan. 15, 2011, killing of Anthony McGee. Romo has not been released and was 17 at the time of McGee’s killing in El Centro.
Another defendant in the McGee killing, Louis Evans, pleaded guilty last year to the charge of voluntary manslaughter.
Romo had been released from custody in April 2011 after his first preliminary hearing when a judge found there was insufficient evidence to hold him criminally liable in McGee’s death.
After his release, Romo and another suspect had been arrested in an unrelated stabbing case that occurred near Swarthout Park in May 2011.
Jurors earlier this month convicted Romo and co-defendant Luis Scott in the May 29 attempted second-degree murder of Antonio Meza, who suffered as many as five stab wounds during what the prosecution said was an unprovoked attack.
